Dr. David Hedrick (author - MUSIC / VISUAL ARTS)
Dr. Hedrick retired from public schools after completing his 28th year. He was most
recently director of vocal music at Shelby County High School in Shelbyville, Kentucky,
where he served a total of 23 years. During his tenure at SCHS, his choirs
consistently received Distinguished ratings at the KMEA Regional Assessment
Festival and the State Music Assessment. He is currently on the faculty of
Campbellsville University where he teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in
music education, choral arranging, and applied voice.
He received his BS degree with a music area (K-12 certification) from Campbellsville
(College) University and his MME from Eastern Kentucky University. He holds a
doctorate in education from the University of Sarasota (FL) and the topic of his
dissertation was A Secondary Level First Year Choral Curriculum Guide: A Design For
Objectives, Implementation, Evaluation, and Minimal Competency Standard.
Dr. Hedrick began the first humanities course at SCHS and created his own textbook
for teaching the class. Since 1999, SCHS scores in Arts & Humanities have increased
more than 24 points. As a professional musician, he has sung in opera, oratorio,
musical theater and vocal recitals. He has presented numerous lectures and seminars
in vocal music education. Having spent more than 40 years as a church musician, he
has also been associated with the outdoor musical drama, Stephen Foster – The
Musical for 33 years, where he presently serves as associate musical director and
musical arranger. He has been on two major tours to Japan with the “Foster”
company, and his choirs have toured throughout the United States. He has worked
with large and small choral groups, including award-winning ensembles.
Dr. Hedrick is a member of the Kentucky Education Association, National Educational
Association, Kentucky Music Educators Association, Music Education National
Convention, and, prior to retirement, the local education associations, district appeals
panel, and school/district curriculum committees. He is the immediate past-president
of the Kentucky’s fifth district music association, is a former board member of KMEA,
and has been named Teacher of the Year at SCHS. He continues to perform
professionally, is a frequent adjudicator for festival assessments, and has recently
copyrighted 35+ of his vocal arrangements and original compositions for publication.

Cyndi Powell-Skellie (author - DRAMA / DANCE)
Cyndi Powell-Skellie is an experienced theatre arts educator for Shelby County High
School. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Speech and Theatre Education with a minor
in History from Eastern Kentucky University and a Masters of Arts in Secondary
Education with an Endorsement in Gifted and Talented from Georgetown College.
An award-winning director of over 25 children’s theatre and high school theatre
productions, she was named ExCel Teacher of the Year in 2003, was a Business and
Professional Women’s Young Careerist in 1999, and in 2005 was awarded the
Intellectual Freedom Award by the Kentucky Council of Teachers of English. An
active member of Kentucky Education Association and National Education
Association, she has served as co-president of her local education association and
speaks out for public educators across the state.
Her performance/production experience includes working with the local and state
Junior Miss program, playing cello with a string quartet and directing children’s plays
for community theatre.
